Osaka, Japan, is a city that beautifully blends rich history with vibrant modern culture. After spending time in Tokyo, we embarked on a three-night adventure in Osaka, exploring its famous landmarks, indulging in local delicacies, and immersing ourselves in the lively atmosphere of the city. Here’s a detailed account of our unforgettable trip.
Day 1: Arrival and Culinary Delights
Traveling to Osaka
Our journey began with a ride on the Shinkansen, Japan’s iconic bullet train, from Tokyo to Osaka. The experience was smooth and efficient, setting the tone for our exciting adventure ahead.
First Stop: Curry House Coco
Upon our arrival, we made our first stop at Curry House Coco, a beloved establishment since 1978, known for its Japanese-style curry rice. We opted for their chicken curry dish, which was a delightful introduction to Osaka’s culinary scene.
Exploring Nipamashi
After settling into our Airbnb in Nipamashi, we ventured out to Kuraman Market. The market was bustling with various food stalls, and we couldn’t resist trying eel on a stick, a local favorite.
Dotonbori and the Glico Sign
Next, we headed to Dotonbori, a vibrant district famous for its neon lights and street food. We walked through the shops of Ebisubashi Suji and finally spotted the iconic Glico sign, a symbol of Osaka since 1935, originally designed to promote Glico’s caramel candy.
Evening Eats
As the rain began to fall, we ducked into an izakaya where we tried okonomiyaki, a savory pancake filled with various ingredients, and yakitori, skewered chicken with onions. We also sampled some sake, enhancing our dining experience.
Later, we watched a food stand prepare takoyaki, a popular dish made of batter filled with diced octopus, and continued to explore more shops. We ended our day with yakimochi, a roasted rice cake filled with red beans, followed by dinner at Bju, where we enjoyed shrimp, gyoza, and Japanese barbecue known as yakiniku. It was a perfect conclusion to a day filled with sightseeing and culinary exploration.
Day 2: A Day Trip to Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto
On our second day, we took a trip to Kyoto. For details on that adventure, check out our dedicated video. Upon returning to Osaka, we decided to try sukiyaki, a traditional Japanese hot pot meal. This dish features thinly sliced beef cooked at the table with vegetables in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. We chose Wagyu beef, which made for a hearty and satisfying meal on a chilly evening.
Day 3: Historical Insights and Sushi Delights
Visiting Osaka Castle
Our final day began with a visit to Osaka Castle, a historical landmark whose construction started in 1583. Originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle has a rich history, having been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current structure, a concrete reconstruction completed in 1931, houses a museum detailing the castle’s history and the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The castle’s modern interior, complete with an elevator, makes it accessible to all visitors.
Shinsukai and Sushi Experience
After exploring the castle, we headed to Shinsukai to see the Sutenkaku Tower. As we wandered through the area, we stumbled upon a lively sushi restaurant called Sakanaen. The unique ordering system via a tablet allowed us to sample various sushi dishes, and we unanimously agreed it was the best sushi we had ever tasted. The prices were surprisingly affordable compared to what we would pay back home in Denver.
Sweet Treats
To cap off our culinary journey, we indulged in some delicious Japanese soft serve ice cream, a perfect treat after a day of exploration.
Conclusion: A Memorable Journey
As our trip came to an end, we boarded the Shinkansen back to Tokyo, taking with us unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for Osaka’s rich culture and cuisine. From the bustling streets of Dotonbori to the serene beauty of Osaka Castle, our three days in Osaka were filled with adventure, delicious food, and cultural insights. We hope this glimpse into our journey inspires you to explore Osaka and experience its wonders for yourself!
